Memoirs, 18--

Copy, by Van Cleve's great-grandson, Maxwell S. Simpson, of the Memoirs of Benjamin Van Cleve; original ms. now in the possession of the Library of Congress. The memoirs include descriptions of the Battle of Monmouth (1778), the family's move from New Jersey to Ohio in 1789, and farming in a frontier community. During the 1790s Van Cleve served as a sutler in the United States Army, and he describes the Indian wars in the Northwest Territory. In addition, he describes the founding of Dayton, Ohio, in 1796. The volume also contains a biographical sketch of Van Cleve's son, John Whitten Van Cleve; a brief autobiography of Moses Simpson, the grandfather of Maxwell S. Simpson, mainly concerned with describing his journey from Newark to Cincinnati in 1813; and a transcript of a letter from Benjamin Van Cleve to his uncle and aunt, Benjamin and Mary Van Cleve, dated 1811. The volume is illustrated with copies of silhouettes of Benjamin Van Cleve and his first wife, Mary Whitten Van Cleve, plans of several forts in Ohio, and a photograph of Moses Simpson. Laid in are a few clippings, and an invitation to a Masonic funeral, dated 1840.
